Why Giving Shouldn’t Be Seasonal

When the holidays come, many people suddenly find themselves in a giving spirit. Something about crisp, cold air and steamy chocolate beverages seems to awaken the charitable parts of modern day hearts. For some reason, you feel more compelled to open your wallet and donate a few dollars in the name of holiday spirit. It just feels right.
Why don’t we chase this feeling all year? Many people who donate find that the feeling of happiness they get will last them much longer than that day or even that week. It continues to follow them and give them the feeling that they have made a difference, and it’s not because they’ve spent an excess of money.

Why Donate?

Donating gives you the unique opportunity to help someone else to get the chance to succeed in life. You enable others to have access to food, water, clothing, shelter, and other basic needs. Charity isn’t a means of spoon-feeding people who don’t work; it is a way of supporting people who were born into areas with natural disadvantages.

You don’t need to be wealthy to give to those in need. In most third world countries, a couple of dollars is enough to support someone for a week. This is why you’ll often hear that no donation is too small. Even a single dollar can be used to provide vaccines to children who would be otherwise exposed to harmful diseases.

How Can I Get Involved?

You can help by finding a cause you would like to support. Many choose to make an Oxfam donation because through it, they are able to support 18 different organisations that have the ability to reach out to people in 90 different countries. You can choose to make a single or monthly donation, and since it is a government sponsored charity you’ll also be able to write it off on your taxes. An alternative method of donation could also be to switch your electricity provider. Switching to a provider like Powershop will ensure that part of your monthly bill will go to help families in need.

If you can’t afford to make a monthly or single donation, you can always choose to offer your time. Contributing even a few hours can go a long way in raising funds, and will be much appreciated by those you support. If you have a lot of time to donate, you could help organise fundraisers or help with office work. However, if you only have a limited amount of time to offer, look for ways to help that don’t require you to be present during a specific time frame. Instead, offer to do something that allows you to be flexible, like writing letters to ask for donations on behalf of the organisation.

Finding a cause to support proves to be a great source of motivation to many who choose to get involved. If you’ve felt like you lack purpose or are in search of a way to give back, look into finding a charity to support. You’ll find that the change you are able to make will make you feel both empowered and inspired.
